installed flash

I bought a new laptop and installed an older version of flash(flash4).
It is lagging big time.
ie. If I create simple instances on the stage, hold "shift" on the keyboard
and begin selecting
each image, I can only select 2 or 3 before flash starts lagging. It
completely stops selecting images
it's moving so slow.
Why is flash lagging??
