Post subject: imported PNG graphic has blurred outline
Archived from groups: macromedia>flash (more info?)

i imported a png graphic...a simple rectangle with rounded corners. when
imported the object, i chose to keep everyting editable rather than rasterize
it. flash appears to have created native flash objects--vector graphics--a
line and a filled area. when i zoom in on the object, the outline appears to
consist of 4 straight lines and 4 curved line segments. unlike an ordinary
rectangle, i cannot select the outline by double clicking it.

the problem is that when i run my flash movie, the corner pieces--the rounded
segments--appear blurred as though they are not lining up properly. the
problem would seem to be something to do with anti aliasing and minute
misalignment.

is there some other way to import the graphic so that it creates a proper
outline? or, alternatively, can i create a rectangle object in flash with
rounded corners?

Actually Urami, PNG is the native file format of Macromedia Fireworks(well, the
extension is, although it's unlike a regular Portable Network Graphic in that
FW.PNGs can contain vector data, ect. - like a PSD), so Flash is indeed
preserving vectors(assuming he *is* working with a FW PNG).

I have noticed this too(apparently disjointed rounded corners), I believe it
is an anti-aliasing problem. Flash's anti-aliasing seems shoddy, I suppose
because it's streamlined for the web. It's the same if you make a rounded
rectangle directly in Flash(rectange tool(R) and as dragging, hold Up or Down
arrow keys).

You can fix it by wither using a stroke size larger than 1px, or by putting it
on a sub-pixel position(such as X:25.5, Y:25.5 - as opposed to something like
X:25, y:25).

HTH

> That is just out of curiosity tho , are you sure ?
Very sure, I use FW myself Smile But like I said, it's not really a PNG, it's
more like a PSD but it uses the extension PNG. I'm not sure why MM decided to
do this. It is interesting though, because even though only FW can edit a
FW.PNG(with saved layers, effects, vectors, ect.) anything that can view a
regular PNG can view a FW.PNG, even a browser.

You are right, for raster images adding extra pixels and unchecking smoothing
is your best bet, but I was meaning the anti-aliasing problems with vector
corners. Go into Flash, use the grid(snap to grid), and draw a hairline rounded
rectangle, then publish. See how the rounded corners look disjointed from the
rectangle? Very odd. Anyways, if you move it to a sub-pixel/half-pixel coord,
something about the antialiasing algorithm smooths it out, and it re-connects
the corners.

cheers
