"handwriting" text in flash - eraser not working

I have a short sentence that I would like to animate as if it is being
written by hand. I have actually done this before but have not run into
this problem. I have created the sentence, converted to movie clip, and am
trying to use the eraser to erase bit by bit. When I click on the symbol
and try to use the eraser button it doesn't work on the symbol, or the text
inside. It shows me that it's erasing, but then reverts to regular text
when I release the eraser button. I have tried all the variations on the
eraser options.
