Archived from groups: macromedia>flash (more info?)

Hi,
I'm new to Flash (8 Pro) and I need help editing a SWF file.

I have reviewed the help files but I can not find out how I can view
individual frames so that I can edit the file.

I have successfully imported the SWF file and the frames (1800+) are shown in
the timeline.

However, I am not able to find out how I can view the individual frames within
the Stage, and/or edit the individual frames.

This is a 60 second SWF file of a little girl singing a song and some of her
mouth movements are not in sync with the words to the song.

I want to be able to edit this (add and/or remove specific frames) so that I
can make her mouth movements match the words within the song.

Can someone tell me how I can accomplish this?
And/or, direct me to information that will tell me how to do this?

With appreciation,
Charles

I don't really follow - you say you imported 1800+ frames but then say you can't see those frames?
You said they imported successfully so I have to assume you *can* see them.
I think I am confused about why you ask how to view the frames within the stage.
As for editing the mouth movements to the audio (which probably wasn't imported along with the swf)
I think you will have a really hard time - SWF format is a compressed format - it is not very
editable compared to the original FLA.
Do you have the original FLA or is this someone elses work?

Hi Chris,
Thank you for your reply.

Since I'm new a Flash, I had someone make this for me.

So since this is the SWF and not the original FLA, then I suppose that's why
it looks like this; (after I imported it)

Thanks again,

You had someone import an swf for you?
Well whatever they did - they didn't do it right - those are all blank keyframes - so nothing
imported - open the document library to make sure.

Hi Chris,

No, I am had someone make a SWF file for me.

They sent it to me email, I saved it to my desktop and then played it.

The file played all the way through from beginning to end, but some of the
animation is out-of-sync with the music (lyrics of the song.)

So, I imported it into my Flash 8 Pro in hopes that I could edit it.

I also tried importing it into my Flash 8 library, and it does show up in my
library, but I can not open it from there to see it on the Stage or find a way
to edit it.

I did convert it back to a FLA and imported that, and it did then show up on
the Stage (without any audio), but I can not find a way to Step through it,
Step-by-Step to edit it.

I have also converted it into an.avi and was then able to capture a lot of the
frames. But, there are so many of them that I thought that it might be eaiser
to edit it that to use the individual frames to make a new one.

I guess I'll just have to go back to the tutorials and see if that will help
me to get to know what's best to do.

As I said before - you cant reallt edit an SWF after it has been imported into flash - SWF is a
compressed format - all layers will be compressed into one layer and all keyframes - you will lose
much of the data (tweens, sounds, actionScript, etc).

May I ask how you converted the SWF to a FLA? Must have used a decompiler tool right?

You are doing a ton of converting (FLA, AVI) and if you want to truly edit the source - ask your
friend for the original FLA.

Hi Chris,

Yes, I'm coming to understand that and other related things as I continue to
rise through this learning curve.

I will eventually get the FLA from my friend, but between then and now I
thought that working on it myself might serve as a good learning experience.

I am using two different programs to convert SWF files.
The Moyea conversion suite and the Ulead GIF Animator 5, of which I'm finding
the latter best.

The reason for that is the Ulead GIF Animator 5 allows me to edit the
individual frames of a converted SWF file and then save it in a variety of
formats, including a FLA file.

I'm still a ways from being able to create in Flash proficiently but my
experimenting, the Tutorials and folks like yourself are helping me get to that
point.

So once again, thank you.

With appreciation,
Charles

Yeah - not sure if any aspect of your process is actually teaching you anything about how to use
flash properly. The best way is to start a new doc and hit the F1 key.
It all depends on your final output - if for the web then what you are doing is completely wrong
(image sequences).
Get the Fla - then start learning Smile
